Dr. Federico Riva

Federico Riva is a conservation biologist and landscape ecologist. He was born in Biella, Italy.

He obtained his BSc and MSc degrees in natural sciences and in environmental biology at the University of Turin.

He earned his PhD in conservation biology at the University of Alberta (Canada) under the supervision of Prof. Scott Nielsen.

He then worked as a postdoctoral fellow with Profs. Lenore Fahrig (Carleton University) and Antoine Guisan (University of Lausanne), developing skills in landscape ecology, biogeography, and macroecology. Before returning to Carleton University in April 2026, he served as Assistant Professor at VU Amsterdam (the Netherlands), working on global land use patterns and their effects on biodiversity.
